Mice

Mice can be a big problem with peas. The signs are lots of small holes soon after sowing and it is best to start again if this happens but not before getting rid of the mice. The most humane way of doing this is to use traps but make sure they are under some sort of protection to stop birds getting at them - a small wire netting cage will do the job. Poison can be used if there are lots of mice. I used to use poison but, believe it or not, the mice learned after a short time what was going on and blocked the poison boxes to stop their pals getting at it. These two photos show this - the one on the left is the closed box with the entrance at the bottom right blocked by earth and the one on the right is the same box but open showing the whole of the tunnel to the right of the bait completely blocked with earth. I tried a box away from loose earth but near a pile of leaves and the box was completely blocked with leaves this time.
