Beans - French

Seeds were planted in 10 Jiffy pots indoors at the end of March for an earlier crop than usual. A mistake as they took off and have had to be transplanted outside under cloches in late April. They will probably be OK but maybe not if the weather turns cold. Nothing lost - they will be sown again in mid May outdoors (see entry for last year).

Beans - French - picking

French BeansStart picking the French Beans at the start of August and these should continue until mid September. Pick them when young and fairly small - before they get bigger and tougher. One or two of those pictured here may be “over the top” and, if so, will be discarded when preparing.

Beans - French

Sow Dwarf French Beans Annabel in mid May direct in the growing site. These should be sown 5 cms (2″) deep, 20 cms (8″) apart in rows 60 cms (2′) apart. There are many French Bean varieties - these are relatively easy to grow, require no support and produce green pods which should be picked young and cooked whole
